Three Workshops with Master Penman Hong Nguyen

Friday, June 25 · 1:00–3:30 PM

A practical approach to graceful, everyday handwriting

American Cursive Handwriting is a beautiful and practical system developed by Master Penman Michael R. Sull. In this hands-on workshop, we will begin with the foundations that make comfortable, controlled handwriting possible — posture, paper position, pencil hold, movement and rhythm — before applying them to letterforms and connected writing.

Through guided exercises and individual feedback, you’ll learn not only how to form the letters, but also how to recognize what is working in your own writing and what to adjust as you practice.

No previous penmanship experience is required.

Discovering the movement and graceful forms of American penmanship

Spencerian Penmanship is one of America’s most distinctive historical writing styles, known for its graceful movement, delicate forms, and rhythmic quality. Building upon many of the movement principles used in American Cursive Handwriting, this hands-on workshop introduces the fundamental movements and forms that give Spencerian its characteristic flow.

Through demonstrations, guided exercises, and individual feedback, you’ll practice the basic strokes and movement patterns that form the foundation of Spencerian writing, then begin applying them to letterforms. The emphasis is not on rushing through the alphabet, but on developing the control and understanding needed to continue practicing with confidence.
